Instead of turning that person in, try and understand him/her and help them become a better person.

  5. Agreed. We must accept that most crimes are committed not out of a simple crooked desire to do wrong, but out of necessity caused by the society that we have built. To group these people as 'evil convicts' is not justice, it is hypocrisy. We must find it in ourselves to help build these downtrodden souls up, instead of leaving them to sit where they are.

  6. I believe that a person's background and upbringing play a huge role in shaping their outlook on the world. However , people must be held accountable for their actions. The gravity of their actions must be taken into consideration along with the background they come from, and whether to punish them or help them become a better person is something that should be decided accordingly.

  7. In order to help a person turn over a new leaf, it is necessary to make the person realize that he is committing a crime rather than just forcing him to accept it since this will never help the person in the long run. It is therefore important to change the person's mindset about society by guiding the person so that he can follow the correct path by himself. This will ensure that the criminal becomes a better person and stays that way, helping himself and society.

  8. I completely agree with the above statement. Sometimes, we humans make mistakes and don't pay attention to the behavior of our loved ones. This leads them into doing something they shouldn't. It is our responsibility to look out for them and educate them about ethics. If we don't do so, they may end up doing something wrong and then they get punished by us and we don't even realize that somehow, it's because of us. With a little bit of love, trust and compassion, everyone can change their mindset and become a better person because believe it or not, everyone has a little sense of humanity.

  9. I agree with the above statement that to help a person reform, one should make him realise of his mistake, rather than imposing harsh punishments on the culprit. We need to create such attachments and bonding’s that they fear breaking the trust. We need to empathise, embrace and educate the sinners. As moral compunctions overtake criminal minds. As in the Thief’s story written by Ruskin Bond, Anil’s compassionate behaviour towards the protagonist changed his attitude. The desire for living an honest and respectable life made him change for the better. Similarly, with affection and trust, a criminal can be transformed into a honest and respected man.

  10. I do agree with the above statement. I believe that childhood experiences and trauma at any stage in one's life deeply affect one’s action later on in life as well. A lot of the time they lose sight of what is right and what is wrong since they are engulfed in darkness, and getting out of it is extremely difficult because often they don’t trust others or fear betrayal. If they do have someone by their side who is willing to empathize and embrace them at their worst, it could truly change them. Educating them on what is wrong and right may also make them have a sense of their wrongdoings. It may help them to recognize who they really are as a person, process their emotions, and improve their way of life. No one is born a criminal or a bad person, circumstances shape them into one. So, they can improve to become a good person as well.

  13. I think that with love, support and education a criminal can be reformed. As sometimes people don't chose to be criminals but due to the underlying situations they feel that they have no choice left, but if we can provide education they can get a respectable job.

  14. I agree with these above statements. Trauma can shape a person. especially at childhood. People get in the darkness, IE, into the life of crime and due to their own issues, cannot break free. One of the few ways to restore these people is via therapy and education. Sympathy, and learning can go a very long way in changing anyone's demeanor, and change them for the better.

  15. I think sometimes instead of directly blaming someone, if we educate him/her about the wrongdoings, that would have a positive effect on the person and could even change his thought-process. Everyone has a backstory to what they might be doing in the present, it might be difficult for them to digest the fact that, our past can not be reversed but our actions in the present do affect our future. Education can bring about a change in someone's life. What we think might be different from someone else' perspective.

  16. Yes I do believe that we can help change a criminal by helping them and guiding them in the right direction. No one is born a criminal, their circumstances make them that way. But if we make them realize that things can and will change for the better. We must make them want to lead a lawful and happy life. Reaching out to them, helping them in whatever ways possible might seem like a small step but can help them a lot.

  17. Thieves don't choose their profession, they're indirectly forced to do so. Society failed to educate and protect them from the harms, and then if anything goes wrong, they pass the bucket. They are not born with the mindset to steal, the mindset is shaped by the influence of many others out there in the world. If they can steal, they can learn to give. Its now upto us to help these poor people go down the right path, go down a path that they will not regret in the future. What we need to show is not disgust, hate or pity. We need compassion, love, trust and support in order to rescue them from the shackles that the society has bound them in.

  18. I completely agree with the above statement. Nobody is born a criminal. But sometimes circumstances force them to be one. We should make them realise that what they are doing is wrong and that they can lead a comfortable and happy life too. Instead of blaming and punishing them, we should help them become a better person. Even a little bit of love, kindness, compassion, trust and consideration can change a person. We should try our best to support them in whatever way we are capable of.

  19. I agree with the above statement .I believe that often our circumstances push us to our limits and force us to become something that we are not. The darkness that surrounds us compels us to do acts that aren't justified. In such a situation showering some light to such people can change his/her perspective .We can do this by teaching them to be judicious in the making of their decisions. By this way they will learn to discern the right from the wrong, for a man's goodness is a flame that can never be extinguished. In context with 'The Thief's Story' written by Ruskin Bond ,Hari Singh turns over a new leaf with the help of Anil. Anil's trusting, compassionate and eager to teach nature goes a long way in transforming Hari from a criminal to a good human being. Hari Singh looked up to Anil as his role model for he empathized ,educated and embraced him with all that he had. Therefore, we must at all times help the vulnerable in changing the way they think.

  20. Most of the times, people don't commit a crime because they want to, it's because they're forced by their circumstances. Maybe they didn't have the privilege to acquire meaningful skills via education. So, we being the privileged ones can make a significant change in their lives by educating them with the best of our abilities. Our contributions may be small, but they will definitely bring about a meaningful change in their lives. Let's try to be the light in their lives and help them come out from their darkness.

  21. Yes I agree with the above statement. We do not know the sole reason behind why people like Hari Singh get into the field of criminal activities. Most of them are forced by circumstances and their present life situations. They don't really indulge in such activities by choice. Therefore, they must be shown the right path so that they can build a better life for themselves. And this can be done by us. We should do everything we can to educate them. They need to be taught to use their conscience to judge their own actions. As it goes, Life is all about a second chance. In the story too, Anil knew that Hari Singh stole money from him. However, he did not do anything because he knew that Hari had realized his mistake and that he wanted to transform into a good gentleman. Therefore, Anil gave him a second chance to truly outshine. As Malcolm X has said, "To have once been a criminal is no disgrace. To remain a criminal is the disgrace”

  22. I agree with the above statement. I believe that criminals don't choose to be a criminal but are forced to be a criminal because of circumstances like poverty, greed for things that they are not able to get easily, traumatic incidents, stressful social environment etc. What leads them to becoming a criminal is there own mentality which is affected by the above mentioned circumstances. If given guidance and showed the right direction, they can overcome that mentality and stop being a criminal.

  23. I totally agree with this statement . I believe we should oppose crime not the criminal. According to me circumstances forces criminal to commit a crime which could be theft or murder. The circumstances could be anything such as poverty, pear pressure, depression, mental instability, etc. We need to change the mindset of the criminal. He should realize his/her mistake. Committing crime is not at all a good thing, but realizing it, and change himself/ herself is a work of good deed. It could be a very beneficial for the society too.

No one is born a criminal, it is the circumstances which make him/her a thief or criminal. To bring him back to a good person, how the person thinks and assumes things should be changed. The mindset of the criminal has to be changed. If the criminal himslef/herself realises that what he/she is doing is not right he/she will improve and try to become a good person.

  25. A criminal is forced by circumstances to live a life of crime. It iswhat he has trained himself to do because there often was no other way. If we show them that there are other ways through education and empathy, we will be changing the way they think about life causing them to go better ways.

  26. The moral compass of illiterate people is not clear. Their main priority is to get money through any way possible. They do not care that they are stealing. They are also orphans so the only person they depend on is themselves and they don't have parents to instil values in them. Only when education is provided to them does their moral compass get clearer.

  28. I think nobody chooses to be a criminal but it is a simple means of survival for them. It leads to a life of lying and stealing to survive which can be changed with proper education and respect and love for them instead of expressing our hatred towards them. Helping them understand their mistake might clear their mind and help them sort their emotions regarding what caused them to choose a lifestyle of stealing.

  29. I agree with the above statement as criminals aren't at fault for their crimes, it's the flawed society that forces them to do so. Sometimes their circumstances might be such that the only way they could make a living is by committing crimes. Helping in changing their circumstances and their way of thinking would go a long way in reducing crime rates and give criminals a change of heart and a lease of life.

  30. This statement is completely true. Nobody just comes out of the womb wanting to steal and commit other crimes. Every human deserves basic rights that allow them to reach their potential and live a happy life. Sometimes these criminals do what they do purely for survival. Due to this, they have a certain pessimistic mindset which has to change if they want to become somebody respectable in the society.

The upbringing of a person plays an important role in everyone's lives but due to some circumstances or without proper guidance, they tend to follow the "fire and ice" path. Yes, I think the above statement is strong and holds true. No one is a criminal by birth and no one is born hating another one for the simplest of reasons. Yes, a criminal does unspeakable things but at times just throwing the criminal, in the darkness of hatred and cuss might make them lose faith in humanity. Everyone's darkness has some light with it along with some past, a reason for their darkness. By appealing to the criminal's conscience and helping them out , educating them about what is right and wrong. Since they never chose to really live this criminal life, we can help them. By forcing them to stop their crime won't make a change. We can help them, become a better person by helping them with food. the right knowledge, by educating them so they can find a good job. Change can take place in a human, it needs to take place curatively.

  35. I agree with the statement mentioned above. No one chooses the lifestyle of a criminal but it is the circumstances they are under that causes them to resort to such crimes. Our society has made it a point to punish without reasoning. A person's life choices are often influenced by their past traumas. I believe that it is a necessity for supposed criminals to surround themselves with understanding, trustworthy, sympathetic, caring and compassionate people who have the ability to bring out their best qualities and help them embrace and utilise these qualities to lead the honest and respectable life they have always desired.

  36. It is not the thief, but it is us who much change first. We make our society, and our arrogance and ignorance is clearly reflecting in the outside world filled with crimes. It is not the thieves who must change, it changes within us, within you, who has the power to change the society. It simply starts with small acts of empathy. Perform an act of kindness cause that is contagious. We can be mindful during every interaction, planting seeds of goodness, showing more compassion than usual. Forgive others, because 300 years from now, will that grudge you told against someone be worth it? We can change ourselves, change our hearts We've been in soaked in lies and brain washed by our society. We have a choice to make: That kid begging on the street might become a terrorist by our own ignorance, or he might become a better person who will start helping others.

  37. People are not born as criminals, their environment, society and circumstances make them criminals. The society is at fault when one has to resort to crime to fulfil their needs. It is the society which excludes people from getting basic facilities such as education, sanitation, healthcare and shelter which forces people to resolve to thievery. Thus, it our responsibility to provide them a better life, by educating them so that they can provide for their family without resorting to drastic measures, and embrace them and include them in the society.

  38. Yes, I agree with the above statement. Being a criminal is not a voluntarily chosen profession but one that is forced upon them by the society. Denial of the basic right to education results in the person being oblivious to the right and wrong things in life. Further, this lack of necessary skill formation forces a person to resort to unfair means of earning a livelihood. Moreover, such people are often despised whereas in reality what they need is love and guidance to be put back to the right path. Hence, a change is needed in the society, instead of working towards the riddance of such people and putting them behind bars; one should work towards their reform.

  39. I completely agree with the given statement. In most cases, people don't voluntarily choose to be a criminal. Certain events or situations that they had to go through lead to them taking a criminal path. It is true that criminals in some cases do indescribable things. This does not mean we should just imprison them. We should try to change them. If we imprison them without trying then, we are imprisoning the humanity of not only the criminals but ours too and are fostering hate. Thus, we need to educate them, understand their problems and try to help them.

  40. what is the use of so many years of education if we can't use it for the welfare of the society. criminals, thieves or burglars are not born but created by the circumstances. and we are the one's responsible for it. we should help all those suffering and it is not an option but our duty. we have to come up to the aid of those less privileged than us and be the makers of a better and safe society and promote equality. because to change the thinking of 'the criminal' we have to change our thinking! we ought to help the helpless, educate the uneducated and protect the neglected!
imprisoning them is like testing their patience and making more criminals out of them. we created the enemies of the society and it is we who need to find the solution for this mistake.

  42. "Feed a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach him how to fish, you feed him for life", In my opinion this phrase is genuinely relevant to this question. You can correct a criminal and punish them , but the most probable outcome to that is that the criminal would go right back to square one the following day. If you were to listen to what the criminal has to say, understand their life and atrocities faced by them, acknowledge their struggles and rightfully explain to them what they're doing is wrong, you can probably change their life. Words resonate with everyone, the right words and patience is the key to help a person understand their wrong doings and actually help change their outlook. Thus, one can help a criminal change for good and make them compassionate, resourceful and loving towards everyone in society.

  43. I agree. Small-time criminals are victims of the apathy of society and of circumstances. They steal for their survival. Punishing criminals without making them understand the repercussions of their actions, won't stop them from doing it again. To change their mentality, one should understand where they are coming from. One shouldn't outcast them , but instead empathise with them. A criminal can
become a good citizen , if we understand them.

The society provides only and only hate for such people however they fail to understand that only if the circumstances were better the person would have lived a better life. The hate provided only increases their hardships. With just a bit of love and care they can be transformed into a completely different being.
